Project 4 – David Breuer a man with many souls

David Breuer-Weil was born in London in 1965 and continues to live and work in North London. His work frequently explores ideas of humanity, history and existence, studying at Central Saint Martin’s School of Art and Clare College, Cambridge University. Breuer-Weil is famed for his monumental solo shows of vast painted canvases referred to as the Projects. ‘The Project’ was held in 2001 at the Camden Roundhouse; ‘Project 2’ was held at the Bargehouse, OXO Tower in 2003; ‘Project 3’ was then held in conjunction with the Ben Uri Gallery in 2007. ‘Project 4’ was held in the vaults beneath Waterloo station in February 2013. It was the largest exhibition of his work to date, featuring over 50 of his large scale canvases in a collection of 130 works. Alongside the Projects Breuer-Weil continues to work on a smaller scale producing works on paper, paintings and sculpture. His giant sculptures Visitor and Visitor 2 were included in Sotheby’s 2010 & 2011 ‘Beyond Limits’ exhibitions at Chatsworth House. In 2012 the work 'Emergence' was installed into Hanover Square, London, as part of the Westminster City of Sculpture'. Today the Project 4, the latest in the series of Breuer-Weil's epic solo projects, includes some 70 canvases alongside a number of sculptures. It’s a mix of colors. it fuses the themes of place with new concerns about the human condition and the artist's role as commentator and creator. “Humanity, philosophy and politics flit between the tragic and the joyous in a visual language that is as much absurdist as it is emotive”. A focal point of this new body of work is a heightened and politically topical interest in ideas of homeland, territory and belonging explored through an extended repertoire of familiar images such as fire and water, boxes, scrolls, books and feet with a new and expansive consideration of cosmology's prophetic and pseudo-scientific structures. The Project series represents Breuer-Weil’s most comprehensive production; it is a monument to humanity and modern life. Is a testament to the city that inspired it.
